So that is the mildly (and I do mean mildly) entertaining Lumiere film I had to do for school. The only requirements were that it be 48 seconds long and that the camera didn't move. Both of those things are true. It's otherwise awful! I'm very sick. I might redo it by Tuesday but who knows!

I also wrote a script that is kinda cute and worked on presents because it's apparently EVERYBODY's birthday right now.

I think you are cute!

I really like this week's a softer world. I haven't been very bothered one way or the other about them lately, but I really, really like this one.

I also wish they would reprint this Threadless shirt:

And here are some things that people in my film class said today:

D: "Her purpose is just to be blonde."

R: "Key grip? Best boy? What are those things?"
L: "Those are the jobs you get if you go to the New York Film Academy."
M: "Once you go key grip, you never go back."

D: "Realistically, it's false."

(All the ones below were about the hypothetical film title "Thirsty Babies," for which we had to come up with a pitch.)

J: "The babies, they savagely attack women and ruin their lives, basically."
M: "Do they go for just the mammaries or the whole breast?"
J: "Nah, just straight mammaries."

J: "There wouldn't be much dialogue. It'd just be like 'waaaah.' And screams."

Have you ever seen or enjoyed watching the O.C.?
Neither. I think they played it at our prom.

33.

Yesterday, Vincenzo and I played house as part of an entirely domestic day. We did laundry! Got groceries! Went to the bank! Cleaned! It was a fully successful day. We were going to go to 300 but that didn't happen, so I'm hoping we'll go tonight. I like to pretend sometimes that I don't live by myself. Helen doesn't count!

Also, I am back from Toronto, which was only a mildly successful trip, despite the shopping! Oh, the shopping. Well, I'm back here now and back to work on Wednesday night so come visit me and buy my candy. It's delicious.

I really want to buy a Mac. I have enough money to do so now, but I think I'll wait until a bit into summer, when I have enough money FOR SURE.

They're so beautiful.

Today, I am going to go to downtown Toronto with no plans, no map and no cell phone. So if you are some crazy stalker murderer type, please leave me alone! I am on an ADVENTURE. It is St. Patrick's Day and I have two rolls of film!

If any of you have downtown Toronto recommendations (camera shops, comic book shops, libraries, whatever) let me know! I have a limited knowledge of Toronto (I get Spadina, Dundas, Young, Queen, etc).

Pictures!

Hello from Ontario

I'm in London, Ontario at the moment, waiting for my brother and his wife (+ tiny baby) to come to the hotel so that we can all go to dinner. My dad has decided to go down and have a beer. My dad is going through pot withdrawal and acting like a complete jackass. I'm really excited to go to my brother's in Toronto.

I've been doing lots of shopping, though! I've been spending too much but all my relatives keep giving me money. I have to start saving some, though, so that I can use it towards rent. Hoo-hah!

I miss Vincenzo terribly, aided none by his absence from electronic communication. Oh well. I think everything will get better once I get to my brother's. I keep saying that, don't I? BROTHER!

My grandparents are old and my aunt is weird and apparently, my cousin Amanda is a lesbian. It's been an interesting trip, to say the least. I'll have many pictures.

Not dreams of axe murderers or falling or whatever, but vaguely plausible things that could happen or have happened to Kate. It was super crappy. I really hate waking up in a bad mood because you have to work so hard to get to a good mood, since you're starting from scratch.

Anyway, Dinosaur Comics make me feel better.

Anyway. I'm really excited. It comes out the day before my birthday. Hooplah!

ALSO.

Dartmouth High School won first place at the Improv Regionals last night. That's right. They're going to nationals.
I wrote two poems today

I know what you're thinking - poetry on a livejournal! Oh god, no! But it's not like that. It's RHYMING poetry. The kind that actually takes a small amount of skill. The first one is called... Um, The Girl From Duluth (Doo-looth).

The girl from Duluth was exhaustingly vain
She thought herself royal and fair
Each day she awoke and invariably spoke
“How lovely and soft is my hair!

How radiant must all the boys think I am!
How must they desire my hand!
The men of Duluth, yes, they all know the truth –
But beauty, they don’t understand.”

Believing princesses deserve more than fools
She locked herself up, far away
The ceilings were tall; mirrors coating each wall
Allowed her to gaze, night and day.

Each year that passed, she became less concerned
With those she’d abandoned outside
The girl from Duluth lost control of her youth,
And without occasion, she died.

Open the aperture! Focus and zoom!
Check your light meter for speed!
Get out a tripod for 30 or more!
Is that the angle you need?

Shoot for the shadows! Develop for light!
Two minutes! Stop, and then fix!
Don't use a fifty milimeter lens
If you're making prints four by six!

Use F eleven! For filters, a two!
Don't think of using a one!
I can't wait until we're allowed lighting kits -
I'm tired of using the sun.

AND THAT'S ALL FOR KATE'S "LET'S PRETEND TO BE JACK PRELUTSKY OR SHEL SILVERSTEIN" MOMENT.

They go like this:

! ; ? . ' ... " : , or exclamation mark, semicolon, question mark, full stop, apostrophe, ellipsis, quotation mark, colon, comma.

Pretty nerdcore, yes?

Also: I learned years ago but was reminded recently that Charles Addams (the creator of the Addams Family) died on the same day that I was born. This alone is enough to make me hope for the possibility of reincarnation. My parents bought the entire series of The Addams Family (from the sixties, with John Astin) and tonight I'm watching the film (with Raul Julia and the incomparable Anjelica Huston). Gomez Addams is the ultimate model for a man, I think.

Crazy guys are the best.
Vincenzo Amadio Ravina

Vincenzo Ravina is a writer, journalist and sometimes (but infrequently) a magician. He is eighteen years old and lives in Northern North America. He is a Rogers Video employee and goes to Kings University. Free rentals are the perk of his job.

Vincenzo Ravina likes pneumatic tubes and Victorian manors. He likes finding objects of interest - such as shopping lists or old photographs - to give to his significant female companion, Katrina Jade Leth. He likes grammar, and his two favourite punctuation marks are the semicolon and the tilde, respectively. He is very good at spelling but does not proofread his essays. He likes to write short stories and novellas. His favourite writer is Chuck Palahniuk.

Vincenzo Ravina has very long fingers that look like spiders and he makes interesting hand gestures when excited. He goes to movies for the directors, rather than the stars, and particularly likes Michel Gondry and Wes Anderson, but has no appreciation for Steve Zissou. He always spells out the word "etcetera" instead of "etc.". He likes Nineteen Eighty-Four and doesn't have a sweet tooth. His father is Italian and his mother is Peruvian. He has published three magic booklets and once paid for a trip to Italy from their profits. He does not like coffee but he does not mind cappucino.

Vincenzo Ravina wears collared shirts and regrets that he no longer sports a tie every day, as he used to. He prefers Superman to Batman and has very little respect for Tim Burton. He thinks Angelina Jolie is unattractive but knows the real name of the Tic Tac Girl. He writes down everything interesting that people around him say because, despite being shy, he loves people and is fascinated by the way they think and interact. He is always collecting material. He writes down a lot of what Katrina says and believes her to be non-cliché. Sometimes he smiles at her for no reason other than that he is happy that she exists, and she feels the same.

Katrina Jade Leth is very much in love with Vincenzo Amadio Ravina, to the point of speaking in the third person, present tense.

I have become someone I am pretty okay with.

Ever since I started school, way back in the years I can't remember, I have been awkward. I have been socially inept, laughing when I shouldn't and being cruel without intent. I have had bad haircuts, worse clothes and terrible taste in music (as well as in love interests). I have never wanted anything more than to be surrounded by interesting and creative people that I can love unabashedly. In essence, up until maybe the last year or so, I was weird. Really, really weird.

I think, now, that I am finally okay with myself. I am comfortable in my own skin for the first time that I can remember. I am not pretending to be anyone anymore and people like me. I have friends at school - Will, the lumberjack comic-book nerd; Dana, the fashion-conscious darling from Dubai; Christin, the mildly-goth girl with a shaved head that can draw better than anyone else I've ever met; Daniel, the former drug dealer-turned skinny photography expert. That's just a few. Weird people. Interesting people. People that are just as eager to be friends with me as I am with them.

I live on my own. I work at one of the coolest stores in the city (by the way, the discount is AMAZING), I have a pretty swell haircut, a writer/journalist/not really magician/wonderful boyfriend Vincenzo for whom few words suffice, a sweet group of friends, decent marks, and I have learned at last to be nice to people. Something I have always wanted. I think it's partially thanks to him.

I don't hate my body anymore. I haven't done anything self-destructive in a good amount of time. I'm not so bitter.

Also, I'm really into photography and let me just tell you how much I'm in love with my Nikon FM 10. Ohh, baby.

That's what's up.

Progressions of time

Last night I watched This Film is Not Yet Rated and it was very good. Vincenzo feared suggesting it, I guess because he thinks I'm not totally into documentaries. However, we both enjoyed it.

This morning I slept on the bus on the way to work, because I had stayed up late on the telephone and because I couldn't help it! I tried drinking espresso today but it did nothing for me. I guess I need to take some time off caffeine so it'll start working.

Today I chipped my tooth again. Not the same tooth as I chipped before, that fateful Battle of the Bands night when I chipped my bottom left canine and then neglected to go to the dentist until well after prom. No, this is my upper left canine and I chipped it while eating a piece of bread at Starbucks today. I fear the cuts it will make to the inside of my mouth. Now, I must find time to go to the dentist.

Tonight I got off work two hours early (thanks, Meri!) and came home and slept from 5:00pm until now, which is 8:00pm. I love naps. I am going to invest in more of them throughout the week. I think it will help me live.

Currently, I am eating some rice and watching The L Word and soon I will be doing linocuts and trying to figure out the VisCult question for this week.

Tomorrow morning I am going to go to the photo department and print, print, print. I might get up as early as eight but I doubt it.

This Thursday, I have a haircut. Yahoo!

I am going to start reading Nineteen Eighty-Four. I never have.

Do not listen to more than two Savage Love podcasts right before bed. Your dreams will make you regret it.

I have been waiting so long for this book to come out, I can't even describe. Christopher Moore is so hilarious in his completely insane way. I love it. The writing in this book had me bursting out laughing on my break at work today. The callbacks to his previous books are insane. I've read almost all of his books, and there are still portions that I'm sure I'm missing out on. Some particularly enlightening excerpts:

"Haven't you always wanted to bone a Smurf?"

"So I like slept till eleven, because we're on Christmas break, only it's called winter break now because Jesus is AN OPPRESSIVE ZOMBIE BASTARD AND WE DO NOT BOW DOWN TO HIS BIRTHDAY! At least not at Allen Ginsberg High School, we don't. (Go Fighting Beatniks!)"

"In her experience, it took a lot of work to fuck the Jesus out of a guy, and even then, he was prone to come down with a bad case of the guilts a day or two later. Not really a problem when you were working out-call, but if you were going to high-ho a whole pack of dwarves on a semi-permanent basis, one of them having a high-maintenance, holy-ghost haunting was going to be a problem."

"But calm was not coming. The smell of cat was tall in the air and then men were jacked on java."

"'I bet it smells like peppermint,' Tommy said.
'What?'
'Elf sex.'"

The book is about vampires in love.
